Jim Dorsey

died June 4, 1879 · San Miguel County, New Mexico

Dorsey was held in the jail at Las Vegas, New Mexico, in February 1880 when a mob took him from the jail and killed him. A brief dispatch reported that a group of 75 men took him out and shot him. A later account, which places the killing in December 1879, says a band of citizens took him from the jail and shot him in a volley at the windmill in the plaza. Another account describes him as hanged, and the accounts differ on the date, the number of men and the method of death.

Cause of death, as reported: Taken from custody and lynched. F. C. Armstrong, recounting events in Las Vegas as printed in the Chicago Inter-Ocean, says a band of citizens took Dorsey from the jail and shot him in a volley at the plaza windmill, and the Burrillville Gazette reports a crowd took him from jail and lynched him.

Reported by: F. C. Armstrong (account printed in the Chicago Inter-Ocean) (witnesses); Chicago Inter-Ocean (reporters); The Burrillville Gazette (reporters).
