died March 18, 1893 · Campbell County Jail, Campbell County, Tennessee

Jesse Jones was held in the Jacksboro, Tennessee, jail on the night of March 18, 1893, when a mob broke in and took him out. The Morning News reports that five men went to the jailer's house at about 10 p.m., covered him with revolvers, seized his keys and unlocked the jail doors. The men then hanged Jones from the cross beam of a gate about a quarter mile east of town, and the paper says townspeople knew nothing of it until the body was found the next morning. The Indianapolis Journal reports that the jailer unlocked the doors and led the group to Jones's cell, and that Jones was hanged in a barnyard, with the paper saying he denied any connection to the matter before he was taken out.
