Jerry Terrell Jackson
Jerry Terrell Jackson, 30, was executed by lethal injection at Greensville Correctional Center in Virginia on August 18, 2011, the first person put to death in the state with a revised three-drug protocol that includes pentobarbital, and he was pronounced dead at 9:14 p.m. His attorneys argued that jurors should have heard about the childhood abuse he suffered, and his sister and brother testified about that abuse. The Rev. Christine Payden-Travers, who had written to and visited him for several years, called him a loyal and caring friend and said, "He is not a monster." Governor Bob McDonnell declined to commute the sentence, and the U.S. Supreme Court denied a request to block the execution.
