Jeremy Lee Thompson

34 years old · died May 2022 · Geneva County Jail, Geneva County, Alabama

Jeremy Lee Thompson was 34 years old, and his grandmother, Verlon Elizabeth Thompson, has carried on the fight over his death. In May 2022, police found him in his car outside a Dollar General clutching his chest, and he told them he was having a stroke. According to a federal lawsuit, officers took him to the Geneva County jail instead of a hospital, where he was kept in a restraint chair for about an hour and a half and was given ketamine by rescue workers. He was pronounced dead at a hospital that night. The coroner's autopsy cited methamphetamine, while the lawsuit says prompt medical care could have saved his life.

Cause of death, as reported: Died of an overdose (disputed; neglect alleged). His estate's federal lawsuit says officers took him to the Geneva County jail instead of a hospital, staff held him in a restraint chair for about an hour and a half, and he died of a heart attack, while the county coroner's autopsy cited toxic effects of methamphetamine.

Reported by: his estate's federal lawsuit (family or their lawyers); county coroner autopsy report.

Lawsuit: His estate filed a federal lawsuit over his death, and the sources report no settlement or award amount.
