Jen McCormack

31 years old · died September 2014 · Forsyth County Law Enforcement Detention Center, Forsyth County, North Carolina

Friends remember Jen McCormack, 31, as funny, smart and generous, and her mother, Janis McCormack, said she always wanted to be helpful; she organized her grandfather's medications and cooked for her grandparents. Sources say she was pregnant and withdrawing from opiates when she was held at the Forsyth County jail in late August 2014, and that she was placed on suicide watch. On September 13 she was found unresponsive in her cell, and she died in hospital after days on life support. Her friend Sarah Sellers wrote to the sheriff that doctors linked a massive heart attack to extremely low electrolytes, but no autopsy was done and the sheriff's office has declined to explain what happened. The county has said she was not in custody at the time of her death.

Cause of death, as reported: Died of illness. Her friend, Sarah Sellers, wrote to the sheriff that doctors linked a massive heart attack to extremely low electrolytes; no autopsy was done and no official cause has been given.

Reported by: Sarah Sellers (family or their lawyers).
