Jeffrey Motts

36 years old · died May 2011 · South Carolina

Jeffrey Motts, 36, was executed by lethal injection at a South Carolina prison in May 2011, the first person put to death with a new three-drug combination after federal agents seized the state's supply of sodium thiopental. In his final statement he wished his mother and grandmother a happy Mother's Day, warned children about drugs, and apologized to his family. He had wanted to donate a kidney to his ailing sister, but they were not a match. A doctor declared him dead about 14 minutes after the drugs appeared to take effect, and the execution appeared to take longer than earlier ones.
