Jeffrey Hall
Jeffrey Hall, 55, was held at Northwest State Correctional Facility in St. Albans, Vermont, when he was attacked by his cellmate in December 2022. He was found bleeding and unresponsive, taken to hospital and placed in a medically induced coma, and he died in March 2023. An autopsy by the chief medical examiner's office found that complications from blunt force trauma to the head caused his death and ruled it a homicide. His cellmate later pleaded guilty to voluntary manslaughter, and his family supported the plea deal; in August 2024 his estate sued VitalCore Health Strategies, the prison's medical contractor at the time, alleging the cellmate's mental health was not properly assessed before he returned to the cell.
Cause of death, as reported: Killed by another person in custody (disputed; neglect alleged). The medical examiner ruled his death a homicide from injuries in a cellmate's attack, and the cellmate pleaded guilty; Hall's family has sued VitalCore Health Strategies, saying clinicians did not properly assess the cellmate's mental health before he returned to the cell.
Reported by: chief medical examiner's office (medical examiner or coroner); Vermont court (court); Hall's family and estate (family or their lawyers); Vermont State Police (outside investigators); Department of Corrections (the agency that held him).
Lawsuit: Hall's estate sued VitalCore Health Strategies, the prison's medical contractor at the time, in August 2024 over his death, alleging that clinicians did not properly assess the cellmate's mental health before he returned to the general prison population.
