Jeffrey Brian Motts

36 years old · died May 6, 2011 · Broad River Correctional Institution, Richland County, South Carolina

The state of South Carolina executed Jeffrey Motts, 36, by lethal injection at Broad River Correctional Institution in Columbia on May 6, 2011. In his final statement he wished his mother and grandmother a happy Mother's Day, apologized to his family, and warned children about drugs. He had wanted to donate a kidney to his ailing sister, but they were not a match, and he had abandoned his appeals. His execution was the first carried out with a new three-drug combination after federal agents seized the state's supply of sodium thiopental. A doctor pronounced him dead about 14 minutes after the drugs appeared to take effect, and the execution appeared to take longer than earlier ones.
