Jaspal Singh
Jaspal Singh, 57, an Indian national and a Sikh, was held at the Folkston ICE Processing Center in south Georgia for more than nine months before he died there on April 15, 2024, according to ICE and news reports. Advocates and civil rights groups said his death was a painful loss for his family and community. ICE said the cause of death was unknown and an autopsy was pending. The Intercept reported, citing records it obtained through FOIA litigation, that an ICE Health Service Corps mortality review found GEO's care deviated beyond safe limits and directly contributed to his death, that he died of a heart attack. A World Socialist Web Site report said an abnormal electrocardiogram was not acted on and there was no doctor on site, and the ICE review it cited found the medical care he received deviated beyond safe limits.
Cause of death, as reported: Died of illness (neglect alleged). A heart attack is the cause reported; an ICE Health Service Corps mortality review, obtained by The Intercept, found that GEO's care deviated beyond safe limits and directly contributed to his death, including an abnormal electrocardiogram that was not acted on before he became unresponsive.
Reported by: ICE Health Service Corps mortality review (the agency that held him); The Intercept (reporters).
