Jason Shaw, 44, of Rainier, was held at the Columbia County Jail. On Dec. 11, 2016, jail staff found him hanging from a bed sheet in his cell. He was taken to Emanuel Hospital in Portland, where he died the next day, with his family present, according to Columbia County Sheriff Jeff Dickerson. The sheriff's office said he showed no sign of suicide risk and that it is still investigating how long he hung before he was found.
