47 years old · died November 4, 2020 · Central Jail Complex, Orange County, California

Jason Ray Jones, 47, died in his cell at the Santa Ana Jail in Orange County, California, on November 4, 2020. The Orange County District Attorney's Office said he died by suicide, hanging himself with a bedsheet from the top bunk. A district attorney's report released in April 2023 found that a correctional officer had logged a welfare check she did not carry out, though prosecutors said his death apparently came after the time she was supposed to check on him and found no criminal wrongdoing. Prosecutors also said earlier checks might have revealed warning signs, a conclusion the report itself described as speculative.
