James Smith was a Baltimore police officer. Around 1 a.m. on Monday, August 5, 2013, he was found unresponsive in his cell at a Maryland jail and was pronounced dead at a hospital. Maryland prison officials said the death appeared to be a suicide. He had been moved to that jail from Baltimore's Central Booking and Intake Center before he died.
