Executed
James Smith
James Smith, a Black man, was hanged at Upper Marlboro, Maryland, on December 18, 1896, in a judicial execution. Before that, he had been held in the Baltimore jail, where he was taken to escape a mob in Prince George County. One newspaper account reports that a Baptist minister in Baltimore baptized him and that he died professing that faith. The same account reports that he appeared calm about going to the gallows.
