James Milligan
James Milligan was held in the jail at Albany, in Gentry County, Missouri. According to a St. Joseph newspaper account quoting a traveler, after the county court declined to pay for a guard of citizens posted around the jail, a mob took him from the civil officers and hanged him from a tree. Before he died, he asked to be baptized, and the request was granted; his father met him at the stream, a meeting the account describes as affecting. A July 1858 report dated his death to July 6, while the St. Joseph account dated it to July 5.
