James Matthew Hill, 59, of McCalla, died at the Jefferson County Jail in Bessemer, Alabama, on September 7, 2026, according to WBMA and Yahoo reports. Jail staff found him unresponsive in his private cell and he was pronounced dead about 30 minutes later, per the reports. The Jefferson County Coroner's Office said an autopsy would determine the cause and manner of death and that no evidence of trauma or foul play had been found so far. The cause and manner remain pending.
