James Mannion
James Mannion, 30, was a barber and the father of two daughters, and he raised them with his longtime partner, Taylor Webster. His relatives say he had been in addiction recovery and had eight months of sobriety before he died at the Cumberland County Jail in August 2022. He was found unresponsive in his cell on a Sunday, and jail leadership told relatives that an overdose is the suspected cause, with the Maine Office of the Chief Medical Examiner to determine the cause and manner of death. Court records say another man held at the jail gave him fentanyl, and that man was indicted in November. His family's wrongful death lawsuit against Sheriff Kevin Joyce and the jail's medical contractor, Armor Correctional Health Services, says he repeatedly asked for help with withdrawal and was denied Suboxone, and the sheriff's office said it does not comment on pending litigation.
Cause of death, as reported: Died of an overdose (neglect alleged). Jail leadership suspected an overdose, court records say a fellow resident gave him fentanyl, and his family's lawsuit says jail staff denied him Suboxone despite repeated requests for help with withdrawal symptoms.
Reported by: Cumberland County Jail leadership (the agency that held him); court records; his family's lawsuit (family or their lawyers).
Lawsuit: His family sued Sheriff Kevin Joyce and Armor Correctional Health Services in U.S. District Court in Portland over his death, and no settlement or award amount has been reported.
