James M. Caley
Dr. James M. Caley, 54, had served as coroner of Calcasieu parish a few years before his death. He was held at the jail in Lake Charles, Louisiana, for nearly two months, and according to a report carried by The San Saba Weekly News, he died there on October 19, 1891, from a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head. The report says he obtained a cartridge for a repeating rifle that had been left in the jail unloaded, and that he shot himself while lying on his bed. Because the account is a newspaper report from 1891, the details of how the rifle and cartridge came to be in the jail are not explained, and no other source is cited for them.
