James Kauffman
James Kauffman, 68, was a doctor who had practiced in South Jersey, and his attorney said he had been under enormous stress for years. He was found dead in his cell at the Hudson County Correctional Center in Kearny, New Jersey, on the morning of January 26, 2018, and officials said he had been moved there for his own safety. A jail spokesperson said he died by apparent suicide, and a source told NJ.com that he had used a torn bed sheet and that staff did not notice anything until he failed to respond. His attorney said the strain of the long legal process may have contributed to his death, and the investigation was continuing at the time of publication.
