Died in jail or a lockup
James Grant
James Grant, a Black man, was held at the jail in Melville, Louisiana, when a mob took him from it on November 16, 1916, and hanged him to a trestle. The Alexandria Gazette's report, published the next day, is the only account available. It does not say how the mob reached him or whether the jail staff resisted, gave up the keys, or handed him over.
