Died in jail or a lockup
James Goings
James Goings, a Black man, was held in the jail at Frederick, Maryland. On Sunday, November 17, 1895, about 800 men broke into the jail, took him from his cell and hanged him from a tree in a field about a mile from the city. Sheriff A. H. Zimmerman and his deputies fired from the windows to try to stop them, but the crowd kept breaking through the door, and the jail bell was rung without help arriving. Two Salvation Army officers asked to pray with Goings as he begged not to be killed, and the Lord's Prayer was repeated with him and most of the crowd.
