James Chavis
James Chavis was held at the Richmond County jail in North Carolina. The Charlotte Democrat reported in 1877 that the jailor went in to bring food to three men held there. According to the paper, the jailor killed James Chavis and wounded another of the men, Asbury Chavis.
Cause of death, as reported: Killed by staff. A North Carolina news item reports that the Richmond County jailor killed him.
