James Carroll
James Carroll, 24, was held in police custody and being taken by train from Washington, D.C., to Frederick in April 1879 when a mob of more than 70 people seized him. Local family history researcher Jane Weir said the mob forced him off the train, dragged him into woods at Point of Rocks and hanged him. His body was left where it was found until the county coroner and a constable arrived the next afternoon. Weir said that despite numerous witnesses, no one was identified or prosecuted for his death.
