James Campbell

46 years old · died January 25, 2026 · State Correctional Institution at Camp Hill, Cumberland County, Pennsylvania

James Campbell died on January 25, 2026, at SCI Camp Hill in Cumberland County, Pennsylvania, a state prison run by the Pennsylvania Department of Corrections. Cumberland County Coroner Charley Hall said he was found hanging from a bed sheet in his cell, where he had been held in an observation cell with a camera, and that Campbell had covered the camera with paper before staff reached him. Hall listed the death as a suicide, and the state's reporting lists the manner of death the same way. The coroner's office referred questions about how long staff took to arrive to the Department of Corrections and State Police, and the department declined to comment. WGAL reported that State Police were investigating and that the coroner would determine the cause of death.

Cause of death, as reported: Died by suicide (neglect alleged). The coroner ruled it a suicide, saying Campbell covered the observation camera with paper before staff reached him, and declined to say how long staff took to arrive, a question the Department of Corrections also declined to address.

Reported by: Cumberland County Coroner Charley Hall (medical examiner or coroner); Pennsylvania Department of Corrections (the agency that held him); Pennsylvania Commission on Crime and Delinquency (outside investigators).
