James Cain

died November 1862

James Cain, a soldier in Capt. Jas. E. Branch's Artillery, was held in a jail near the city before a court martial sentenced him to be shot. Newspaper accounts from November 1862 say he was taken from the jail and shot by a firing squad at an encampment, and that he died at the first volley alongside John Bowers. Reporters wrote that he walked to the execution calmly, talked and laughed on the way, and regarded the sentence as just. The accounts are from Confederate-era newspapers and describe the sentence as the court martial's decision; no other objections to it are reported in these sources.
