James Anglin
James Anglin died in 2018 while held at the Lake County Jail in Florida. His mother, Pia Sacchetta, said she had always worried his addictions could lead to his death and never expected it at an institution that should have been watching him. WFTV's reporting, based on jail records, says he asked for help while going through drug withdrawal, and that a nurse at Armor Correctional Health Services declined to come see him after he missed an evening medication pass. His mother's lawsuit says he became violently ill, vomiting repeatedly and unable to walk, and that detention deputies failed to act; the sheriff's attorney places blame on Anglin and on Armor Correctional nurses, and the case has been moved to federal court.
Cause of death, as reported: Died from neglect by staff (disputed). His mother's lawsuit says deputies left him vomiting and unable to walk in withdrawal and that a nurse ignored his requests for care, while the sheriff's attorney blames Anglin and Armor Correctional nurses for his death.
Reported by: his mother's lawsuit (Pia Sacchetta) (family or their lawyers); 9 Investigates (WFTV) reporting based on records (reporters); the Lake County Sheriff's Office's attorney (the agency that held him).
Lawsuit: His mother sued Armor Correctional and the Lake County Sheriff's Office over his death, and the case was moved to federal court, with no settlement or award reported.
