Jacob Jones
Jacob Allen Jones, 26, of Van Buren, died on October 15, 2022, at a hospital, less than 24 hours after he was held at the Crawford County Detention Center. His mother, Catherine Jones, said her son's brother was with him for more than five hours and that she believes he did not get medical attention in time, and a relative held in the same pod has given an account that disputes how quickly he received help. Sheriff Jim Damante's office cited preliminary medical examiner results pointing to a drug overdose, though the specific substance has not been confirmed and the medical examiner has not stated a cause of death. An internal investigation and a state police review are underway.
Cause of death, as reported: Died of an overdose (neglect alleged). Sheriff Jim Damante says preliminary medical examiner results point to a drug overdose, and his family says jail staff did not give him timely medical attention.
Reported by: Crawford County Sheriff Jim Damante (the agency that held him); Crawford County medical examiner's office (preliminary results) (medical examiner or coroner).
