Died in jail or a lockup
Jacob Henson
Henson was held at the Howard County jail in Elliott City, Maryland, when, early on a Tuesday morning in late May 1895, a mob took him from the jail. According to accounts published at the time, the mob hanged him from a tree. A coroner's jury in Howard County found that he came to his death at the hands of persons unknown. Governor Brown publicly condemned the lynching as a reflection on the community and the state, and the accounts say the mob feared the governor might intervene in the case. A placard left on his body blamed Governor Brown for the killing.
