Jackson

died March 20, 1897 · Newport

Jackson was hanged in March 1897 at a jail in Newport, from a double trap alongside another man, Walling. The Santa Fe Daily New Mexican reported that he was pronounced dead about six minutes after the drop, and that both men declared their innocence before the execution. The Eddy Current reported that a telephone exchange between the circuit judge and the governor preceded the hanging, and that Jackson was given five minutes to decide on a final statement. That paper said he told officials he could not say Walling was innocent, which conflicts with the other account. His remains were to be taken to Wiscasset, Maine, for burial.

Cause of death, as reported: Executed by the state. Newspaper accounts say both men declared their innocence before the hanging, and that Jackson said he could not say Walling was innocent.

Reported by: 1897 newspaper accounts (reporters).
