Jack Harris

Monroe County, Arkansas

Jack Harris, a Black man, was held in the Clarendon jail in Arkansas in 1903. About fifty men came to the jail demanding the keys, and the sheriff had moved him to a barn under a deputy's guard. The mob found him there, overpowered the guard, and took him to a wagon yard, where they hanged him. The first attempt failed when the rope gave way, and he was then drawn up by hand and died of strangulation.
