Died in jail or a lockup
J. W. Gillenwaters
Jeff D. Gillenwaters was held in the jail in Tate County, Mississippi, when a masked group broke in early on the morning of September 10, 1881. According to a correspondent's letter to the Memphis Appeal, the jailer was threatened with pistols and first withheld the keys until his wife produced them, after which the group took Gillenwaters upstairs and left to the west. Townspeople arrived too late, and the letter says shots were heard during the pursuit and that he was beyond doubt dead. Other papers reported a man taken from the Senatobia jail by a mob and shot, which matches this account.
