Died in jail or a lockup
J. C. Freeman
J. C. Freeman was a blacksmith who worked in his own shop in Rayville, Louisiana. In July 1910, on a Sunday night, a mob took him from his cell at the Rayville jail and hanged him in that shop, according to two newspaper accounts. The mob obtained keys to the outer door from the sheriff's office and broke open the door to his cell. One account says the sheriff telephoned an attorney that Freeman had been taken to a higher court.
