Itzcoatl Ocampo
Itzcoatl "Izzy" Ocampo, 25, was a former Marine whose family said he visited the grave of a friend killed in combat in Afghanistan twice a week, and who suffered headaches and hand tremors after returning from Iraq. He was held pretrial at the Orange County jail in California, where he was found ill in his single-occupancy cell on Wednesday, November 27, 2013, and taken to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead the next afternoon. His lawyer, Michael Molfetta, said he died after ingesting household cleaner in his cell and that jail deputies should have monitored him more closely, given his mental health issues. The sheriff's department said jail medical staff attended to him, but officials had not given a cause of death, and an autopsy and district attorney investigation were expected.
Cause of death, as reported: Cause not yet determined (neglect alleged). His lawyer, Michael Molfetta, says Ocampo ingested household cleaner in his cell and that deputies should have monitored him far more closely, while officials have not given a cause of death and the autopsy is pending.
Reported by: his lawyer, Michael Molfetta (family or their lawyers); Orange County Sheriff's Office (the agency that held him).
