Ismael Mares died on August 22, 2021, while held at the Ramsey Unit, a Texas Department of Criminal Justice prison in Brazoria County. The Texas Office of the Attorney General's custodial death report records his death at that unit. A MyRGV.com report on August 23, 2021 said the Starr County District Attorney's Office confirmed the death of a 44-year-old man named Ismael Mares Jr. The district attorney said he would not disclose the circumstances, and the Texas Department of Criminal Justice did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
