Iris Hardeman
Iris Hardeman was held with other women at Orleans Parish Prison when Hurricane Katrina flooded the building in 2005. Fellow detainee Joyce Gilson told the ACLU that Hardeman was already very sick, and that the women tried to help each other through the flooding and lack of food, praying, singing and staying together. Gilson said Hardeman died a little while after the women were moved to Angola, but Gilson did not see the death because she had been placed in a different part of the building.
Cause of death, as reported: Cause not yet determined. Fellow detainee Joyce Gilson said Hardeman was already very sick before she died after arriving at Angola, but no cause of death is given.
