Ira Johnston

died July 14, 1895 · Greenville County, South Carolina

Ira Johnson was held in the jail at Greenville, South Carolina, in July 1895, when a mob came for them. One report says about 100 men took Ira Johnson from the jail on the morning of July 15, carried them beyond the city limits, hanged them from a tree and shot the body repeatedly. Another account gives the night of Sunday, July 14, as the time of the killing, so the reports disagree on when it happened. Neither says whether the jail's officers resisted the mob or handed Ira Johnson over.
