Died in jail or a lockup
Hullen Owens
Hullen Owens was held at the county jail in Texarkana, Texas, in May 1922, after being moved there from a hospital. A mob broke into the jail, battering the door with an iron beam, and took him from custody. The mob dragged him at the end of a rope for eight blocks until he died, then burned his body downtown. Thousands gathered outside, though only a comparatively small number took part in the killing, and a judge's appeal for the law to take its course had no effect.
