Hullen Owens
Hullen Owens, a Black man, was held in the Miller County jail in Texarkana, Arkansas. On the night of May 19, 1922, a mob broke down the jail door and took him from his cell, according to the Bisbee Daily Review. That account says the mob dragged him about eight blocks at the end of a rope and that he died of strangulation. Wire dispatches printed in other newspapers the next day describe the same killing as a lynching by a mob of about a hundred citizens.
Cause of death, as reported: Taken from custody and lynched (disputed). A mob broke down the doors of the Miller County jail, took Owens from his cell, and dragged him at the end of a rope until he died; one dispatch says the jail doors were the only resistance the mob met, and another says the article does not say whether officers resisted or handed him over.
