Huie Conerly
Huie Conerly, a 16-year-old Black man, was held in the jail at Franklinton, Louisiana. On the night of Monday, February 18, 1884, a mob of about ten to fifteen men broke open the jail, took him out and hanged him from the jail steps. His body hung until the next morning, when the coroner and a jury of inquest took it down. A letter from Franklinton says no one has been identified as a perpetrator, and a St. Tammany Farmer editorial argued against vigilante action.
Cause of death, as reported: Taken from custody and lynched. The coroner and jury of inquest found that a mob broke into the Franklinton jail, took Huie Conerly out and hanged him, according to the St. Tammany Farmer and a letter from Franklinton.
Reported by: Coroner and jury of inquest (medical examiner or coroner); St. Tammany Farmer (reporters); Letter from Franklinton.
