Hugo Pinell
Hugo Pinell, 71, was killed in August 2015 at California State Prison, Sacramento, in Folsom, days after he was moved into the general population. Prosecutors said he was stabbed 19 times while another man held him down, and that the attack set off a fight involving as many as 70 others. Corrections officials said officers responded with pepper spray and warning shots, and five people with stab wounds were taken to outside hospitals. Pinell's lawyer said he was a marked man who should have been protected, and the prison had not answered whether it failed to protect him.
