Executed
Hugh King
Hugh King was executed at the gallows in St. Louis, Missouri, on May 19, 1827, after being held in the city jail. The sheriff took him from the jail under a guard of United States troops, and he rode to the gallows seated on his coffin. On the platform he read a written statement in which he spoke of his remorse and of drink as a source of much of his trouble. A account of the day describes him holding a Bible on the way and keeping his eyes fixed on it, and going up the ladder with a firm step.
