Died in jail or a lockup
Hugh Foize
Hugh Foize was one of eight Black men held in the Barnwell County jail in Barnwell, South Carolina. Shortly before dawn on December 28, 1889, a mob of several hundred masked men broke into the jail, overpowered the jailer, and took the men to the edge of town, where they were shot to death. The Richmond Dispatch reported that local leaders condemned the killings. The governor was asked to send troops to keep the peace.
