Hugh Ferguson was hanged at the state penitentiary in Moundsville, West Virginia, on August 6, 1919. Several months earlier, a mob broke into the jail at Berkeley Springs, Virginia, where he was being held, in an attempt to lynch him, according to the Broad Ax. A grand jury later indicted seven alleged members of that mob. The Broad Ax's report of the jailbreak is the only account of the events that this narrative draws on.
