Hoy
Hoy was held in a jail in Albemarle County, Virginia, in February 1865. The Daily Dispatch, citing an unnamed source, reported that he was one of five men taken from the jail on the order of Major Mason, under military authority, and carried to Shiflett's Hollow, where he was hanged. A Staunton Vindicator reprint of a Chronicle report gave a different account, saying that Hoy was one of two men taken to the jail, that a major ordered him taken out and carried to Shifflett's Hollow, where he was hanged, and that four others were shot. The two accounts disagree on how many men were taken from the jail and on what happened to the others.
Cause of death, as reported: Taken from custody and lynched. The Daily Dispatch and the Chronicle, as reprinted in the Staunton Vindicator, say Major Mason ordered Hoy taken from the jail and carried to Shiflett's Hollow, where he was hanged.
