Henry Stewart

60 years old · died August 6, 2016 · Hampton Roads Regional Jail, Virginia

Henry Clay Stewart Jr., 60, died on August 6, 2016, while held at the Hampton Roads Regional Jail awaiting a court hearing. According to a federal lawsuit brought by his son, Joe Austin, and his sister, Michelle Wilson, of Newport News, he repeatedly asked for medical help for abdominal pain, blackouts and rapid weight loss, and those requests were ignored. The family says he died of bleeding from a perforated stomach ulcer. The jail places responsibility on its medical contractor, Correct Care Solutions, which denies it failed to report his condition. The Virginian-Pilot later reported that his death, along with Jamycheal Mitchell's, prompted multiple investigations into the jail.
