Henry Smith

died February 1, 1893 · Lamar County, Texas

Henry Smith, a Black man, was being brought back by train to Paris, Texas, in the custody of guards after being taken in Texarkana, according to a February 2, 1893 account in the Beatrice Daily Express. The paper says a crowd of thousands met the train at the depot, took him from the guards and a deputy sheriff, dragged him through the streets and killed him on the open prairie near the depot, where he was tortured and burned. The paper reports that the deputy sheriff's resistance was brushed aside. A 2012 Dallas News article places his death in 1892, months after events in Hillsboro, and says a mob took him and burned him at a scaffold in front of a large crowd.

Cause of death, as reported: Taken from custody and lynched. A mob took Henry Smith from guards and a deputy sheriff at the Paris, Texas depot and burned him to death on the prairie after torture; a second account says he was handed over to a mob and burned at a scaffold in Paris.
