Henry S. Shuler
Henry Shutor Jr. was one of five men held in the Ripley County jail at Versailles, Indiana, when a mob took them out in mid-September 1897. Newspaper accounts describe several hundred men, one saying they were unmasked, who hanged the five men from an elm tree about a hundred yards from the jail. Accounts differ on how the jail was entered: some say the jailer was forced to hand over the keys, while others say he was knocked down and the keys were taken. The date is also reported differently, as September 14 or 15. One newspaper report said public sentiment favored the mob and that an investigation was ordered.
