Died in jail or a lockup
Henry Pennington
Henry Pennington was held in a makeshift jail in Hurley, Virginia, under heavy guard, according to one report. In late December 1909, a mob of about one hundred citizens took him from the jail and hanged him from a steam pipe. One account places the hanging in a lumber mill, while the other gives no location beyond Hurley. The two reports differ on these details, and the accounts of the mob's motive are not repeated here.
