Henry Johnson
Henry Johnson, a Black man, was held in the jail at Lake Village, Arkansas, after a fight between white and Black residents on November 3, 1903, in which a white man, Frank Anderson, was killed. At about noon that day, a mob broke down the jail doors, took Johnson to the center of town and hanged him, according to the Montgomery Advertiser and the Savannah Morning News. The Gazette of Little Rock reported that a circuit judge had announced he would come to hold a special term of court, but the crowd did not wait for him. The Richmond Planet reported that a mass meeting urged that the law be observed, but a larger group of excited people went to the jail.
