Henry Fitts
Henry Fitts, a Black man, was held in the Norway jail in Orangeburg County, South Carolina, in January 1913. According to a telegram from the Norway magistrate to Governor Blease, reported in the Colorado Statesman, a crowd rode into town before dawn, broke into the jail, took him, and shot him a short distance from town. A note left on his body was signed "Friends of Governor Blease." The Richmond Virginian, reprinting a Philadelphia Inquirer editorial, said the note was pinned to his body and blamed Governor Blease's rhetoric for the killing. Neither account says whether jail staff resisted the mob or gave up the keys.
Cause of death, as reported: Taken from custody and lynched
Reported by: Philadelphia Inquirer editorial, reprinted in The Richmond Virginian (reporters); Telegram from the magistrate at Norway to Governor Blease (the agency that held him).
