Henry Davis

died December 21, 1906 · Jennifer Road Detention Center, Anne Arundel County, Maryland

Henry Davis was held in the Annapolis jail in Maryland on December 21, 1906. Early that morning, a masked mob of about thirty to sixty men broke into the jail, took him from his cell, and carried him to a hill outside town, where they hanged him from a tree and shot him. Newspaper accounts report that the warden gave up the keys at pistol point, that the deputy sheriff said he was told to go up the stairs, and that officers offered little or no resistance. A coroner's jury returned a verdict of death at the hands of persons unknown, and the state's attorney was reported to have said he would seek to identify those responsible.
